Conversations with Today’s Creative Bloggers {Pretty Handy Girl}

Remember when I used to ONLY do features on other bloggers?  If you’re somewhat new to TCB, yes…..I only featured other bloggers because when I first started blogging, there weren’t very many creative bloggers and I wanted to create one site to promote and gather some of the most creative people on this earth. Somewhere along the way, I started venturing off that path and then realized, I had hardly featured anyone anymore.

Well, it’s back……but with a twist! I used to surprise my features but now I’ll be sharing a set of questions with many of your favorite bloggers.…..a way to get to know them better. Exciting isn’t it?

Today were chatting it up with Brittany from Pretty Handy Girl.

I originally featured her a couple of years ago and since that time, I’ve actually met her in real life! We are both on the creative team for Lowes and she is just as amazing as I first thought.  If you’re not familiar with Brittany’s site, it’s OK, I won’t make fun of you, but seriously…….she is one of those women who knows her way around all the power tools. Great ideas!

Brittany with Pretty Handy Girl

KIM: Why did you choose to start a blog? And what do you hope people learn and take away from visiting your site?

BRITTANY: I’ve always wanted to empower women with the same skills I have when it comes to home improvement and home decor. I actually wanted to teach classes in my garage to women. I thought I could empower a lot of women that way and help them use power tools and complete DIY projects. My husband squashed that idea by saying he thought I’d reach more people with a blog. Little did I realize how right he was. I may have been able to teach 100 people in a year. Now I’m reaching hundreds of thousands of women per month. Crazy!

KIM: If you had to choose a paint color to live with the rest of your life, what would it be?

BRITTANY: Ooo, that’s a tough one. I’d have to say for walls Benjamin Moore Aesthetic White. It’s the perfect neutral off white color. But, if I had to choose one paint color for furniture and everything else, Sherwin Williams Copen Blue. It’s the color I chose for our kitchen cabinets and I loooooovvvveeee it!

KIM: What would you consider your biggest decorating secret or strength?

BRITTANY: Other blogger, magazines, Pinterest, Houzz.com. LOL. I struggle with decorating. I actually pay close attention to other bloggers who’s style I like and try to remember how they achieved a certain look. Decorating is one of my weaknesses.

KIM: How did you choose your blog name?

BRITTANY: It was my husband’s idea also. I was fine with it as long as the emphasis is on Pretty “Handy” ;-D. I struggle with thinking that I’m attractive, but I guess every woman does to an extent.

KIM: Mac or PC?

BRITTANY: Mac all the way back to when I was in college (we won’t talk about how long ago that was!)

KIM: If you suddenly had a full weekend to yourself, what would you do?

BRITTANY: Probably build something fabulous! The last time my husband took my son’s for the weekend was my birthday weekend and I built this: When a Closet isn’t a Closet.before and after closet

(hey, I featured that project in her original feature!)

KIM: If you had a 5 minute shopping spree at your favorite craft store, what products would you grab first?

BRITTANY: Only 5 minutes? Ack, that’s torture. I’d probably be the magpie and just grab the first shiny thing I saw.

KIM: If you had a 5 minute shopping spree at Home Goods, Pottery Barn, etc… What would you grab first?

BRITTANY: Can I grab an entire bed from Pottery Barn? If not, my favorite decorative accents are lighting. I’m constantly swapping out my ceiling lights. But, I actually prefer to buy them at Habitat ReStores and paint or alter them like this one I did.updated light

KIM: You’re having a party…..what appetizers would you serve?

BRITTANY: My favorite: Spanakopitas! The flaky phyllo dough shell and the cheesy spinach insides (makes you think you are at least eating your veggies. But, let’s not talk about the calories.)

KIM: Night owl, or early bird?

BRITTANY: Always been a night owl.

KIM: What is your favorite room in your home and why?

BRITTANY: My art & craft studio. The kids and I spend a lot of time up there. It’s cozy and always helps us get creative: See it here!creative studio | pretty handy girl

KIM: Before blogging, what did you do?

BRITTANY: I ran my own design business as an illustrator, graphic designer and web designer.

KIM: Do you ever think about giving up blogging?

BRITTANY: Not yet. I do take some time off from time to time and I think that keeps me from getting burned out.

KIM: What’s one of your favorite posts?

BRITTANY: Oh that’s a tough one. There are many projects that I’ve enjoyed sharing. You are going to laugh, but it might have to how to change out an ugly almond outlet. I get more thank yous and praise for teaching people how to complete this very simple upgrade.

But, if I had to pick my favorite project, it would be my kitchen. I literally just finished building back our kitchen after a leak left us in a gutted situation. It was the toughest DIY project I’ve ever completed (and longest.) But, I am absolutely thrilled with the results. The most recent photos of my kitchen are in my Holiday Home tourpretty handy girl But, there are more pictures in my other kitchen tutorials: Custom Wood Range and Tile Back Splash .

KIM: What’s one thing you don’t think your readers know about you?

BRITTANY: How much I value their comments and emails. It’s truly my payment for all the hours I spend on tutorials.

So there you have it! Thanks Brittany for being a sport and answering all my nosy questions.
