Frozen Yogurt Cubes- Freezing Yogurt for Smoothies

I don’t know why I never thought about freezing yogurt for smoothies before.  We used to buy smoothie making packets that had berries and frozen yogurt chips all in one. But I noticed that the yogurt they were using had high fructose corn syrup in it and that’s when I had my AHA moment.  Why couldn’t I just freeze my own yogurt?  This way I could choose a yogurt I wanted.  One without HFCS or lots of extra sugar.

Adding yogurt to smoothies not only gives it that creamy texture, but it’s a great way to add extra nutrition, especially if you’re making them for your kiddos.  My son loves using the frozen yogurt cubes because it’s much more convenient and it also gives his smoothie a more frozen texture along with using frozen berries.

I love simple solutions!  Using a small ice cube tray, I simply spooned yogurt into each section.  I placed them in the freezer overnight, and transferred into a ziplock bag later for easy access.

frozen yogurt cubes We use 3 or 4 cubes in each smoothie.  Here are a few of our favorite concoctions. You’ll have to play around with measurements, we just kind of dump ingredients in.

  • scoop of peanut butter

CreamSicle

  1. Great idea! I’ve been thinking of doing that with smoothies, both would be great tho!

  2. Jake loves it when I add nutella to his peanut butter banana smoothie. We picked & also purchased lots of fresh berries this summer. I froze them on cookie sheets, then put them in Ziplocs so they stay separate. Now we have , strawberries & blackberries from across the street to add to our winter smoothies. Thanks for the tip! Now ilk have to try freezing my plain, non fat Greek yogurt from Costco for thicker smoothies!

  3. I had typed blueberries too, but it got erased.

  4. Super idea. I make smoothies almost daily, I’m going to add this. BTW I highly recommend a Vitamix Blender for all your smoothies… that’s how I’m able to sneak things like kale and broccoli into my kids! ;)

    • I would LOVE a Vitamix! I have a ninja which is pretty good at blending, but I’m sure the Vitamix is way better!

  5. Genius idea!!

  6. These look pretty yummy! I need to start making smoothies at home on a regular basis!

  7. You can also make an easy mini pop-sicle by putting plastic wrap over it and sticking toothpicks in each one. the plastic wrap is there so the toothpicks will stay up straight.
