Starting a Blog- 5 things I wish I would have known

I am often asked for advice for starting a blog, or website. I guess since I’ve been doing this for a little over 5 years, someone may think I know what I’m doing. HA! I wish I could say TCB was the result of a master plan, but honestly, like many things in my life, I jumped in with both feet without a plan. Blogs weren’t want they are “now days”. Most had a simple template via Blogger or Typepad. I didn’t even know how to link to someone without placing their entire web address. Oh the things I’ve learned. Blogging has come a long way and I’m now doing a bit of mopping up on some of those early years to make my pages more visible online. I could have really used this blogging class.

5 things I wish I’d known when I first started blogging

1. Name my images- I didn’t know that images should have a name. Naming your images to reflect your keywords in your post will also help drive traffic to your site. That way when someone searches “Fondant Cakes” an image from TCB will pop up. It’s also helpful to give people the information they’re searching for. Naming the ALT tag is important too.

2.Basic SEO- (Search Engine Optimization) I thought a header was a soccer move. Now I’m working with Header 1, 2 and 3′s daily. By writing your posts with your keyword headers, it helps google to figure out the direction of your post. I use the google keyword to help figure out my h1, h2, and h3. For example, My Header (title or permalink) could be Mac & Cheese Recipe, my h2 could beWhite Truffle Mac and Cheese recipe, and my h3, could be How to make Macaroni and Cheese. Google now understand my post.

3. To buy my domain name- By the time I realized I should buy my domain name, someone who was web savvy saw my quick growth and nabbed it about a year before I tried buying it. So I bought the .org and .net. Of course they have offered it to me to buy the .com……….for a very pretty penny. Now they sit with a few links on the dot com site gathering $$ for every click from their advertisers. You should also buy your own name as a web domain……and your children’s. I need to double check that I’ve done this as well.

This is where heading to Go Daddy would and could have saved me time and money. Go Daddy makes it easy to set everything up at once. They are the webs largest domain name and hosting provider with Do-it-yourself website building an hosting. And with their excellent customer service…….it really would have saved me a few head aches.

4. To start out with WP- If I would have started with WordPress, I would have saved myself a lot of headache with the move. Maybe people are still on blogger or Typepad and love it. You gotta do what’s best for you. As a WP with my own domain, I am full control of the design and I’m told that it works much better for SEO.

5. To think about and set up categories- Had I made a plan of what I really wanted to offer on my blog, I could have set up categories. This would have resulted in an organized mess, rather than just a mess. :)
